Check Out The Awesome Vintage Liberty Magazines I Picked Up For My Next Decoupage Project

Today we went antiquing to Salado. While I have sworn a blood oath to my boyfriend to not buy anymore big, heavy pieces of furniture he has to lug around until I’m done with all my current projects (BOO!), I am always on the hunt things to decoupage with. We hit up the Salado Antique Mall because I wanted to get some old magazines, circa 1940′s/50′, for a project I have in mind.

Success!

These are vintage copies of Liberty magazine, founded in 1924:

From its inception, they set out to make the magazine more topical, daring and exciting than any competitors. Information was presented in a style heavily influenced by the emerging motion picture industry and focused on the most sensational and popular issues. The magazine flourished when illustrated magazines were the most important form of mass entertainment. This was an era of unique creativity and growing involvement in world affairs.  During the following 26 years the magazine charted the moods, attitudes, lifestyles, fads, and fortunes of middle America through its three most significant decades.

LOL at ‘ThePrivate Life of J. Edgar Hoover’. IMG_20130706_234445

They were only about $5 each. They’re falling apart; most of the pages are torn, but that actually adds to the look I’m going for. I am going to use these to cover a dresser I got for free from some good friends of ours.

I love the Salado Antique Mall, mostly for their insane collection of vintage books, magazines, song sheets, cards and more.

And their prices are extremely reasonable.AND it’s a haggle-friendly zone. Don’t be afraid to negotiate with them; they’re actually quite reasonable and fair.

I also picked up some vintage library card cataloge cards at Bee’s Antiques in Salado  next door. If you’re close to my age, you remember when you had to learn the Dewey Decimal System so you could use these to find the books you wanted. These were typed out, individually. I get really nostalgic when I see things like this.

I have a nice end table that I am going to cover with these.  I think it could end up being one of my favorite pieces.

Lastly, I snagged this Texas almanac from 1974. The kitschy tourism ads alone are worth the $3 I paid for it.

I have no idea what I’m going to use this for yet. Check out my Etsy store here to see what I  normally do with the stuff I find (custom orders available!)
